    Coalition preferences in multiparty systems

    "Coalition preferences in multiparty systems have received increasing attention in recent years, both as an additional political identity beyond parties and as another explanatory factor for vote decisions above and beyond party preferences. In this paper, we use survey data from the 2006 Austrian election to investigate the accessibility of party and coalition preferences and the extent to which coalition preferences can be explained by party preferences and other affective and cognitive factors such as candidates, ideology, and issue positions. The evidence suggests that questions about coalitions are associated with longer response times than similar questions about party preferences, that is, respondents must make more of a cognitive effort to form and/or retrieve them. Finally, coalition preferences are only partially predicted by party preferences and candidate evaluations, while policy preferences are mostly unrelated. Coalition preferences emerge as a fairly independent factor in multiparty systems." (author's abstract

    The Effect of Randomness on the Mott State

    We reinvestigate the competition between the Mott and the Anderson insulator state in a one-dimensional disordered fermionic system by a combination of instanton and renormalization group methods. Tracing back both the compressibility and the ac-conductivity to a vanishing kink energy of the electronic displacement field we do not find any indication for the existence of an intermediate (Mott glass) phase.Comment: 4 page

    Investigating Pretrained Language Models for Graph-to-Text Generation

    Graph-to-text generation aims to generate fluent texts from graph-based data. In this paper, we investigate two recently proposed pretrained language models (PLMs) and analyze the impact of different task-adaptive pretraining strategies for PLMs in graph-to-text generation. We present a study across three graph domains: meaning representations, Wikipedia knowledge graphs (KGs) and scientific KGs. We show that the PLMs BART and T5 achieve new state-of-the-art results and that task-adaptive pretraining strategies improve their performance even further. In particular, we report new state-of-the-art BLEU scores of 49.72 on LDC2017T10, 59.70 on WebNLG, and 25.66 on AGENDA datasets - a relative improvement of 31.8%, 4.5%, and 42.4%, respectively. In an extensive analysis, we identify possible reasons for the PLMs' success on graph-to-text tasks. We find evidence that their knowledge about true facts helps them perform well even when the input graph representation is reduced to a simple bag of node and edge labels.Comment: Our code and pretrained model checkpoints are available at https://github.com/UKPLab/plms-graph2tex

    Modeling Graph Structure via Relative Position for Text Generation from Knowledge Graphs

    We present Graformer, a novel Transformer-based encoder-decoder architecture for graph-to-text generation. With our novel graph self-attention, the encoding of a node relies on all nodes in the input graph - not only direct neighbors - facilitating the detection of global patterns. We represent the relation between two nodes as the length of the shortest path between them. Graformer learns to weight these node-node relations differently for different attention heads, thus virtually learning differently connected views of the input graph. We evaluate Graformer on two popular graph-to-text generation benchmarks, AGENDA and WebNLG, where it achieves strong performance while using many fewer parameters than other approaches

    Kinetic modelling of methanol synthesis over commercial catalysts: A critical assessment

    Kinetic modelling of methanol synthesis over commercial catalysts is of high importance for reactor and process design. Literature kinetic models were implemented and systematically discussed against a newly developed kinetic model based on published kinetic data. Deviations in the sensitivities of the kinetic models were explained by means of the experimentally covered parameter range. The simulation results proved that an extrapolation of the working range of the kinetic models can lead towards significant simulation errors especially with regard to pressure, stoichiometric number and CO/CO2_{2}-ratio considerably limiting the applicability of kinetic models frequently applied in scientific literature. Therefore, the validated data range for kinetic models should be considered when detailed reactor simulations are carried out. With regard to Power-to-Methanol processes special attention should be drawn towards the rate limiting effect of water at high CO2_{2} contents in the syngas. Moreover, it was shown that kinetic models based on data measured over outdated catalysts show significantly lower activity than those derived from state-of-the-art catalysts and should therefore be applied with caution for reactor and process simulations. The plausible behavior of the herein proposed kinetic model was demonstrated by a systematic comparison towards established kinetic approaches within both, an ideal kinetic reactor and an industrial steam cooled tubular reactor. Relative to the state-of-the-art kinetic models it was proven that the herein proposed kinetic model can be applied over the complete industrially relevant working range for methanol synthesis

    Efficient determination of cysteine sulphoxides in Allium plants applying new biosensor and HPLC-MS² methods

    Cysteine sulphoxide (CSO) contents of 16 different accessions of garlic (Allium sativum L.) and 15 varieties of onion (Allium cepa L.) were measured using two different rapid analytical methods: a biosensoric approach and a newly developed HPLC-MS2 technique. Both methods allow quantification of naturally occurring cysteine sulphoxides present in Allium plants without time-consuming sample pretreatment such as derivatisation of amino acid derivatives prior to HPLC-separation. It has been found that the amount of alliin, which is the predominant CSO occurring in garlic, varies between 0.2 and 2.2 g/100 g dry matter. Contrary to that, isoalliin representing the main CSO in onion has been detected in significantly lower amounts (0.3 to 1.25 g/100 g dry matter)

    Magnetic resonance imaging analysis of the bioabsorbable Milagro™ interference screw for graft fixation in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction

    Ligament graft fixation with bioabsorbable interference screws is a standard procedure in cruciate ligament replacement. Previous screw designs may resorb incompletely, and can cause osteolysis and sterile cysts despite being implanted for several years. The aim of this study was to examine the in vivo degradation and biocompatibility of the new Milagro™ interference screw (Mitek, Norderstedt, Germany). The Milagro™ interference screw is made of 30% ß-TCP (TriCalcium phosphate) and 70% PLGA (Poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid). In the period between June 2005 and February 2006, 38 patients underwent graft fixation with Milagro™ screws in our hospital. Arthroscopic ACL reconstruction was performed using hamstring tendon grafts in all the patients. MR imaging was performed on 12 randomly selected patients out of the total of 38 at 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery. During the examination, the volume loss of the screw, tunnel enlargement, presence of osteolysis, fluid lines, edema and postoperative screw replacement by bone tissue were evaluated. There was no edema or signs of inflammation around the bone tunnels. At 3, 6 and 12 months, the tibial screws showed an average volume loss of 0, 8.1% (±7.9%) and 82.6% (±17.2%, P < 0.05), respectively. The femoral screws showed volume losses of 2.5% (±2.1%), 31.3% (±21.6%) and 92.02% (±6.3%, P < 0.05), respectively. The femoral tunnel enlargement was 47.4% (±43.8%) of the original bone tunnel volume after 12 months, and the mean tunnel volume of the tibial tunnel was −9.5% (±58.1%) compared to the original tunnel. Bone ingrowth was observed in all the patients. In conclusion, the resorption behaviour of the Milagro™ screw is closely linked to the graft healing process. The screws were rapidly resorbed after 6 months and, at 12 months, only the screw remnants were detectable. Moreover, the Milagro™ screw is biocompatible and osteoconductive, promoting bone ingrowth during resorption. Tunnel enlargement is not prevented in the first months but is reduced by bone ingrowth after 12 months
